A film in four parts documenting ArtTIME: a project of the Lafayette Parish School System implementing Visual Thinking Strategies and Kennedy Center arts integration methods and models in five elementary and middle schools from 2010–2014, funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination grants program.

“All of our schools want it, and why wouldn’t they? We’ve had some terrific results.”

— Dr. Pat Cooper, Superintendent

From 2010–2014, five elementary and middle schools in Lafayette Parish School System implemented the ArtTIME model, impacting over 4,500 students and 200 classroom teachers. The goals of the ArtTIME project centered on improving student achievement in core academic subjects through arts integration, enhancing teacher content knowledge of the arts, implementing research-based arts in education model programs, and providing students with supplementary arts learning experiences.

ArtTIME in Acadiana — filmed in the final semester of the project — introduces the people, place, and programs involved in the project. Through dozens of stakeholder interviews and classroom lesson videos, ArtTIME in Acadiana provides an overview of project successes and challenges.

“VTS & Arts Integration were such valuable techniques, and the experiences we had were so rich. The children really came on board, the teachers really came on board. This is an avenue you will want to take your children down.”

— Dana Schmersahl, Principal

“At a school board level, this would be a no brainer. You just gotta do it.”

— Felise Williams, Principal

Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both.

Visual Thinking Strategies methods ask students to look carefully at works of art, talk about what they observe, back up their ideas with evidence, listen to and consider the views of others, and discuss many possible interpretations.

“The ArtTIME grant with VTS and its other professional development opportunities for our teachers has made a bridge with the Common Core.”

— Paget Guidry, Art / Music Specialist
